In our work environment different medical specialties like Obstetrics, Anesthesiology, Surgery and Neonatology commonly work hand in hand. In this setting not only medical skills and knowledge are of essence, but also not medically related skills, like e.g. effective communication, optimal use of available resources and team work play a key role for granting optimal patient safety and outcome.
Medical Simulators are high tech machines that give the impression of a real patient and have the capability to simulate a multitude of emergency scenarios. Rare clinical emergency scenerios thus can be trained and handled repeatedly without endangering a real patient and improving medical management at the same time. The basic concept is built on adult educational methods, integrating accepted international standards and the most recent guidelines.
The physicians in our team have a long tradition in simulation trainging, in fact the longest in Austria. Since 2001 hospital staff as well as medical students are trained in handling emergency scenarios and problem solving strategies. Involving multiple departements played a key role in creating an atmosphere resembling the real work environment. Initially we started a close cooperation with the department of pediatrics, wheras over time other departments like OBGYN, Trauma Surgery, Gastroenterology, Emergency Medicine and General Surgery joined our team.
In our Sim Center we are able to imitate almost any situation relating to our specific work environment, including peri- and intraopeartive as well as intensive care scenarios.
Debriefing and case discussions after the training sessions focus on improving team work and identifying the root of problems, steering away from the old paradigm of blaming certain individuals for a mistake. Our team therefore introduced the » PASIS system, an analytical incident reporting system that has proven its efficacy and reliability internationally.
