Excellence in Perioperative Medicine – Responsibility in Patient Care, Education, and Research
The Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Medicine facilitates modern medical procedures that rely on highly specialised expertise in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. We support our patients safely and responsibly throughout the entire perioperative pathway – from preoperative evaluation and preparation, through anaesthetic management, to postoperative care in the recovery room or within our intensive care units.
Our commitment is to provide medically excellent, technologically advanced, and compassionate care, grounded in the latest scientific evidence. Patient safety, personalised treatment, and interprofessional collaboration are central to everything we do.
Clinical Excellence Through Specialisation
Our department is organised into three closely collaborating clinical divisions:
- Clinical Division of General Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine
- Clinical Division of Specialised Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine
- Clinical Division of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine
Austria’s Largest Training Centre
As Austria’s largest training centre for anaesthesia and intensive care medicine, we bear a special responsibility for educating the next generation of specialists. Residents benefit from a comprehensive, structured, and quality-assured specialist training programme, supported by experienced consultants, modern simulation-based education, and a wide clinical case mix.
Regular internal educational programmes, certified courses, symposia, and national and international congresses complement our training portfolio and foster continuous professional and personal development.
Research for the Medicine of Tomorrow
As a university-based department, research is a fundamental part of our mission. Our research groups conduct clinical, translational, and basic science studies that address key questions in anaesthesia, intensive care, and pain medicine. The close integration of research and clinical practice ensures that new scientific insights are quickly and responsibly translated into patient care.
Our research activities are internationally connected, interdisciplinary in scope, and open to all staff members as well as students of the Medical University of Vienna.
