Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Medicine Clinical Division of General Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine
The Clinical Division of General Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the Medical University of Vienna delivers comprehensive care with more than 40 anaesthesia workstations and 24 intensive care beds. As Austria's largest division, it employs over 170 physicians proficient in all standard anaesthesia procedures. The division collaborates closely with various surgical departments and oversees 32 intensive care patients. It acts as a centre for bariatric surgery and offers specialised care for liver and kidney transplants, complex neurosurgical cases, obstetric anaesthesia, paediatric anaesthesia, burn injuries, and polytrauma. In the intensive care unit, the division also manages patients post-lung transplantation, including the use of ECMO.
For clinical fellows (3-12 months), the division provides dedicated training in (1) airway management for patients with head and neck tumours, (2) anaesthesia for major abdominal surgery, including both invasive and non-invasive haemodynamic monitoring, (3) paediatric anaesthesia and sedation for diagnostic procedures, (3) anaesthesia for bariatric surgery, and (4) neuroanaesthesia. For a critical care fellowship, besides patient-centred general critical care, a special emphasis is placed on perioperative intensive care for patients undergoing thoracic and maxillofacial surgery. The division prioritises innovative teaching methods and the training of students, physicians, and fellows, with supervisors holding the EDEC qualification teaching echocardiography in anaesthesia and intensive care. Actively engaged in research, the division provides ample opportunities for young scientists to develop and participate in university programmes.
